The Lancet “WHO’s new HIV guidelines: Opportunities and Challenges”

In the July, 2013 issue of The Lancet, Kenneth Mayer, MD, Co-Chair of The Fenway Institute, and Chris Beyrer, MD, MPH of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health look at new guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) for the initiation and management of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The new guidelines focus on earlier initiation of HAART to help prevent the spread of HIV, informed by recent research such as the HPTN 052 study, which showed earlier initiation of HAART resulted in a 96% reduction in the risk of transmitting HIV to a negative partner.
