Fenway Health has once again been named an LGBT Healthcare Equality Leader in the HRC’s annual Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). This title is in recognition of Fenway’s commitment to providing the LGBT community with healthcare that is accessible, respectful, and of the highest quality.
The HEI 2014 LGBT Healthcare Equality Leaders are a select group of 426 national healthcare facilities that meet the HRC’s Core Four criteria. Leaders have established patient non-discrimination policies and employee non-discrimination policies, uphold equal visitation for LGBT patients and their visitors, and require staff to receive training in LGBT patient-centered care.
While much progress has been made in LGBT healthcare equality, the numbers show that we still have far to go. According to the HEI 2014, 56% of LGB patients and 70% of transgender or gender non-conforming patients have experienced discrimination in healthcare. Fenway Health is proud to be a leader in the march toward full healthcare equality for all people.
“We commend the leadership of each and every healthcare facility for actively taking steps to enhance the care they provide to LGBT patients and their families,” said HRC Foundation President Chad Griffin. “We celebrate this year’s 426 Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality. Most of all, we invite all healthcare facilities to follow our Leaders’ lead in committing to provide equitable and inclusive healthcare for LGBT Americans.”
