Today’s youth have a lot to offer our communities, but many are discouraged to find their voices being ignored or silenced by society at large. A local artist is hoping to change that, one album track at a time. On November 22, Alone At The Opera will play a concert to launch the new youth empowerment single “Keep Calm & Carry On.”
The talent behind Alone At The Opera is Tyler Richard, a Lynn-based artist who has been writing, recording, and producing music since 2010. He has performed at several area Prides, including Worcester Youth Pride and North Shore Youth Pride, and has been a part of Fenway Health’s Boston Pride Parade contingent. With his first official single release, Richard hopes to reach a wide audience with a positive and uplifting message.
“‘Keep Calm & Carry On’ is all about speaking to youth – whether it be LGBT, straight, or whatever background you come from – and saying that a lot of times in this world, those who are older than us may shoot down our opinions or beliefs,” Richard explained. “[The single] is all about facing judgment or backlash without feeling hurt, and knowing that one day, you’re going to make a difference. You have that power.”
LGBT youth struggling with self-identity and coming out need to know that their voices matter, and that they’re not alone on their journeys, Richard added. “I’ve always been a believer in the phrase ‘it gets better;’ it does, with time and effort,” he said. “I want to bring a sense that, while it might feel bad now and you’re in a situation where people don’t understand what you’re going through, remember: There are support systems out there, and you’ll find them.”
The “Keep Calm & Carry On” release event will be held November 22 from 6:00-10:00 PM at the American Legion at 69 River St., Middleton. Open acts include spoken-word poet Demetrio Carrion and acoustic artist Susan Jervis. Admission is $10 at the door.
