On Thursday, July 27 TransCEND (Transgender Care and Education Needs Diversity) will hold a community meeting for anyone interested in learning more about services offered by TransCEND and the future of the program. AIDS Action Committee Executive Director Carl Sciortino and AIDS Action Transgender Health Coordinator Chastity Bowick will answer questions. Light refreshments will be served and attendees will receive a free gift!
TransCEND provides support and risk reduction services to transgender women (male to female), who experience much higher rates of HIV than the general population. The program offers free HIV and STI testing and free risk reduction materials such as condoms. Women can also obtain assistance with accessing basic services, medical care, support groups, educational groups, and individual case management. Staff also help clients find healthcare providers who are transgender affirming and answer questions about the gender transition process.
TransCEND offers three drop-in peer support groups. Two are for newly transitioning individuals. The first meets from 6:00 to 7:30 PM on the first Tuesday of every month at Fenway Health’s 1340 Boylston St. Boston offices. The second meets from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM on the fourth Friday of every month at AIDS Action Committee, 75 Amory Street, Boston. Shero, a peer support group for transgender women of color, meets from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on the third Wednesday of every month at Connected Boston, 31 Heath St., Fourth Floor, Jamaica Plain. Plans are underway to start a group for transgender men, and a second group for transgender women of color in Codman Square.
Other upcoming events include a housing and employment workshop from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Thursday, August 4, at AIDS Action Committee 75 Amory Street, Boston. Staff from AIDS Action’s housing department will answer questions about how to find housing, including subsidized housing, and human resource staff will offer tips on how to find employment. A member of the legal department will also be available to answer questions related to discrimination in housing or employment.
A movie night will be held from 7:00 to 10:00 PM on August 18 at AIDS Action Committee, 75 Amory St., Boston.
