Fenway’s Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center opened for business in their new and expanded space on the second floor of 75 Kneeland Street near Chinatown this morning. Looking for us? Look for the unique entrance to 75 Kneeland Street! The new space is not far from the Borum’s previous home and is just steps from the Tufts Medical Center Orange Line station. National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

April 10 is National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD). NYHAAD highlights the impact HIV/AIDS has on a generation of young people who have never known a world without it. Despite, or perhaps because of, having grown up with HIV/AIDS as a fact of life, youth are disproportionately affected: In 2010, 1 in 4 new HIV infections occured in youth ages 13–24 years About 12,000 youth, or about 1,000 per month, were infected with HIV. About 60% of all youth with HIV do not know they are infected, are not getting treated, and can unknowingly pass the virus on to others.

World AIDS Day 2012: HIV/AIDS and Youth

In advance of World AIDS Day, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a new Vital Signs report on HIV among young Americans. This analysis of the latest data on HIV infections, testing, and risk behaviors among young people serves as a stark reminder that over three decades since it’s onset, HIV/AIDS continues to impact our communities. Young people ages 13–24 account for more than a quarter of all new HIV infections each year. Among those most affected are young gay and bisexual men, who in 2010 represented more than 72% of new infections in this age

Transgender Awareness Week: Stand Up For Trans Youth!

Fenway Health is observing Transgender Awareness Week by highlighting the health disparities affecting the transgender community. At The Borum, our focus is on young people ages 12–29, so we wanted to highlight some of the challenges faced by trans and gender non-conforming youth—and stress the need to do more to support and care for them. As the infographic above illustrates, discrimination can create significant barriers to trans youth living happy healthy lives: In GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey, 80% of transgender students reported feeling unsafe at school because of their gender expression.
