Today, President Donald J. Trump issued an executive order titled “Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty.” It is designed to permit political speech by religious institutions that might previously have risked their tax-exempt status. The order did not include broader “religious liberty” provisions that would have given businesses, non-profit organizations, and other entities a license to discriminate against people who are LGBT, have had abortions, or unmarried people who engage in sex. Trump Administration Signals Plans To Reverse Section 1557 Regulations Prohibiting Discrimination On The Basis Of Gender Identity In Health Care

On Tuesday, May 2, 2017, the Trump Administration signaled that it plans to reverse the Affordable Care Act Section 1557 regulation banning discrimination in health care on the basis of gender identity. After the Section 1557 rule was implemented under President Obama, a group of five states and religiously affiliated health care organizations filed suit against the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), specifically challenging the provisions of the Section 1557 rule that interpreted sex discrimination to include discrimination based on gender identity and termination of pregnancy. Fenway Hosts Delegation Of Irish LGBT Advocates

The Fenway Institute was thrilled to host a delegation from Ireland and Northern Ireland of policy makers, advocates, youth workers, legal professionals and other leaders working on behalf of the LGBT community. The exchange program, Advocating for Human and Civil Rights for the LGBT Community, was coordinated through the Irish Institute of Boston College. Staff from the National LGBT Health Education Center at The Fenway Institute met with this delegation on April 27 for an in-depth discussion on The Institute’s work and how its research could be used to address challenges facing the LGBT community in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
