Summer: a time for vacation? Not for the LifeSkills Boston Team at The Fenway Institute! The members of the LifeSkills team have been hard at work throughout these hot summer months to reach out to LGBTQ communities in the city and recruit participants for the study. A NIH-funded research study for young transgender women ages 16-24, LifeSkills sets out to test a group intervention designed and led by other trans women to empower participants and reduce sexual risk behaviors. National Women’s Health Week: Advocate for your health!

This week, May 13–19, marks the celebration of the 13th annual National Women’s Health Week. Initially, as I reflected upon the significance of this week, I felt uninspired. I realized I was disheartened and somewhat offended by the simplistic health messaging around National Women’s Health Week. Looking at other Women’s Health Week resources, I found the same general health advice: eat healthy, exercise, seek routine preventive care, avoid unhealthy behaviors, and foster good mental health. Fenway at First Event 2012: Transgender Public Health Programming, Practice, and Research

Fenway Health was well-represented at this year’s First Event (January 18-22, 2012), an annual transgender conference produced by the Tiffany Club of New England (TCNE.org) and attended by over 600 people. More than 10 Fenway Health staff members made the trip to Peabody, MA to attend workshops and network with pride with the transgender community—Fenway’s biggest showing ever.
